Shea named ‘legend’

Dec. 1, 2014

IJHF member Donna Mikels Shea will be honored with the "Indy PR Legend Award" at the next Indianapolis Public Relations Society luncheon Dec. 17 Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis.

During her newspaper career, she reported for the Indianapolis Times and was one of the first female assistant city editors in the Scripps-Howard chain.

She interviewed newsmakers such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, and she made a mark with reports that focused on social issues that needed attention. Her stories often often brought social change, such as her series of reports on the challenges faced by mentally disabled that led to the creation of Noble Centers.

In 1954, she helped create the CASPER Awards as a way of honoring the news media for exemplary stories about human needs.
