William Meharry Glenn
1985
Sigma Delta Chi charter member William Glenn was the great-grandson of Alexander Meharry whose gift to Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw) helped build East College, home of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. The main door in Meharry Hall is named for Alexander Meharry.
William was born April 21, 1888, in Hillsboro, Ohio. Following two years at the University of Illinois, he came to DePauw in 1908 and received his B.A. in 1911. While at DePauw he worked on the Mirage Board, was president of his class and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. Possibly referring to a flair for drawing which Glenn developed later in his life, his senior yearbook notes, “A flattering painter who made it his care, to draw men as they ought to be, not as they are.”
Glenn is credited with being the designer of the Sigma Delta Chi charter; he later wrote The Sigma Delta Chi Story, the fraternity’s 40th anniversary history, published in 1949.
